What is 35mm & Medium Format Film?

35mm film is the classic, old-school way of making photographs — no digital sensor, just real film and light. We shoot black and white 35mm because it has a timeless, nostalgic feel with beautiful grain and contrast that digital just can’t fully recreate.

The process is a little more hands-on and a little more slow (in the best way). We load the film into the camera and carefully expose each frame as the day unfolds. After your wedding, we develop the film using traditional darkroom chemicals at home, then scan the negatives into high-resolution digital files, so you get the best of both worlds: real film images you can actually use and share.

Because film is a physical medium, there are some rare things that can go wrong — like a roll getting exposed to light, a camera or shutter issue, or something not going right during development or scanning. It’s very uncommon, but part of working with film is embracing that it’s a handcrafted, slightly unpredictable process.

That’s also why I take extra care every step of the way, from using multiple cameras to carefully storing and developing your film. It’s slow, intentional, and a huge part of why film feels so special.

How can we best plan our day to make the most our of capturing great film photographs?

Time is your friend. Film requires time & patience. Schedule a call with Jessy & Brandon to plan out the best layout for the wedding for the best light.

Yes, we do. $200.00 per additional roll as this is not included in our wedding packages (price subject to change!)

Medium Format the details

120 Medium Format film is a type of analog film used in medium format cameras, which creates larger images than standard 35mm film. Because the negative is much bigger, it captures more detail, smoother tones, and a more cinematic look. You’ll often notice it in the form of creamier highlights, deeper blacks, and that soft, dreamy quality — especially for portraits and quiet, emotional moments. 120 film gives you images that feel more slow, soulful, and elevated — perfect for capturing the quieter, more intimate moments of a

wedding day.

35mm the details

35mm film is a type of analog camera film that measures 35 millimeters wide and has been a standard in photography for decades. It’s the same format that was used in classic photojournalism and many iconic historical images. It captures photos on a strip of light-sensitive film instead of a digital sensor. Each roll usually holds 24–36 frames, and every photo is individually exposed by light passing through the lens and hitting the film. This creates that signature film look — natural grain, soft contrast, and a more organic feel than digital photography.
