It’s been a whirlwind of a month, and so refreshing to change gears and start photographing couples so intimately. I’ll share a secret with you, I actually am far more nervous photographing these sessions than weddings. I find capturing a couple, their vibe, their story and their own personalities is no easy task. Especially when you strip away all the glamour & the natural emotional moments that happen during a wedding, It’s just two people, my camera and an adventure.
Kate & Iain started off with a drink (haha as most do!) Iain made us a concoction that tasted like a fudgesicle, I was a fan, although Kate was definitely not, haha! We went out and adventured their hood during the golden hour. I knew that wandering around and finding some beautiful light and checking out the architecture would be the perfect start. Before we had begun our adventure, Iain was asking me some great questions about ‘engagement photos’ in efforts to make it clear he wasn’t into the whole engagement photo thing & the cheesiness associated with it all. Well, I couldn’t agree more.
After photographing couples for three years, I have learnt that every couple is different, obviously. That each couple loves differently, and when capturing them in their element isn’t as simple as throwing them into a couple ‘poses’ and capturing them in the traditional format of how an ‘engagement photo session’ appears. And there is not one way that I go about capturing couples. However, there is one thing that I tell most my couples, especially the couples that are a bit more resistant to have their photos taken. I encourage them to envision themselves, 50 years down the road, old & grey. Imagine being in that time of your life, and looking back at yourselves at the young couple you were. How do you want to see yourselves? How do you want to remember this time in your life? So rather than feel so in the moment and silly getting photos taken, remember how awesome it’ll be 50 years down the road to see yourselves together! So with that in mind, and without further ado, here is the Esplanade Adventure with Kate & Iain. I don’t know where we’ll be in 50 years, I do hope that these photos will be with you guys to share your beautiful love story with your family.
