Last week, I had the pleasure of cruising up north to a small town called Elmvale & working with two truly sweet souls. Sarah & Matthew (and Jack) welcomed me with huge smiles. I was BEYOND excited to get to see their renovated home (seriously, this place is my dream home!) And after getting to chat with these two and hear about their world, I was utterly inspired to photograph their love. The reason they reached out to me is because they have both been offered incredible jobs in Prince Edward Island. They mentioned how quickly it happened and how fast the process would be, and knew they needed to get some photos together in their first home before they transitioned onto the next path of their lives. A huge focus for me during this shoot was conversation. It was incredible to hear their renovation story, all their memories & travels together and how they fell inlove. Matthew had both Sarah and I in tears when he shared his proposal story.
I couldn’t cover absolutely everything so I’ll let Sarah’s words take it away,
“Our home was our unintentional love story… It helped us build such a metaphorical and literal foundation for a beautiful relationship. We learned how to trust each other’s instincts and when to respectfully challenge eachothers process. We were fortunate to have been gifted vintage materials which we repurposed throughout the house, in an aim to preserve the integrity of a depression home built in the early 1900s. Matthew and I tried our best to breathe new life into the layout, adding personal yet functional details throughout.
Over the past few years we spent countless months apart, but I consider ourselves lucky with the various methods of communication we have today. It took effort and planning, however we knew what we had was special right out of the gate which made it completely worth while to wake up early to squeeze in a chat or set an alarm to wish eachother a happy day.
Our garden was Matthews passion right from the beginning as he comes from a long line of men with green thumbs. Jack became his protege, and I help when I can. It’s fairly simple..we grow what makes us feel good. We value honest ingredients to help maintain a healthy diet, which helps with Matthews intolerance of preservatives. It’s rewarding to know we can provide for ourselves in this way, and share with our friends and family.”
Without further ado, here is the humble goodbye to Sarah & Matthew’s Country Home Love in Elmvale, Ontario. I wish you both all the best on your journey and feel so grateful to have been there to capture this special time in your lives.
